The most famous ships of the Vikings were undoubtedly their effective warships, known as drakkars (“dragon ships”). These were long, elegant vessels, fast, reliable and at the same time light enough to row or carry them on their hands if necessary. Such ships were designed to enter shallow rivers and moor to gentle banks, allowing the Vikings to catch their enemies by surprise.
